The Bee Hive

Project type

Still life, pen, watercolor

Date

02/13/26

This project has three bees walking in the middle of a colorful circle. The first bee is fully pen (black and white) the second bee is half black and white and half watercolor. The third bee is fully watercolor. the circle is the only part of piece that has everything in color, and everything outside of the circle is supposed to have no color except the lone fully watercolor bee. I used hatching and cross hatching with pen, and wet on wet and wet on dry for the watercolor. A picture and my love for bees inspired this artwork, this art brings up a topic of how important bees are. My goals as an artist is to get better at watercolor and create more pieces that look more like water color than it does acrylic. This piece did in fact help me reach my goal for that through the honeycombs that were watercolor. I learned how to properly layer water color to create depth and how much shadow and highlight I should put for depth of pen. The final piece is what I imaged, which is good because it pretty closely resembles the photo. This piece will make me do more artworks that are in pen. I have discovered what type of medium I love the most.
